Facial attractiveness has fascinated thinkers since antiquity, but has been the subject of intense scientific study for only the last quarter of a century. This review covers universal patterns in facial preferences. Results will last for a long time.įacial attractiveness: General patterns of facial preferences Results are satisfactory and no side effects have been reported so far. It can be used in those cases where patients are reluctant to undergo surgery, or as primary indication in the correction of minor nose defects. The medical rhinoplasty for a "plunging" nose is a simple and very effective technique with immediate results. No significant side effects were reported. Results were evaluated using a definitive graduated score calculated by patient's and doctor's satisfaction score (range, 1-10) and by photographs' score at time 0, after 30 days, and after 180 days. In all of the cases, the treatment was conducted with hyaluronic acid (24 mg/mL), the same substance used for face rejuvenation. In 45% of the cases, botulinum toxin was employed. The average age of the patients was 42.7 years. Ninety-five patients were treated between January 2006 and July 2007. The present study aims to illustrate this new technique and evaluates safety and results. In the author's experience many of these problems can be successfully approached with a new medical technique, which consists of using only hyaluronic acid for the correction of nasal angles and botulinum toxin for patients with hyperactivity of the depressor septi nasi muscle. The management of nasal deformities, and in particular those with "plunging" tip, has always been a typical area of interest in surgery. The ideal nose, as it pertains to the ideal white female profile, has characteristics that differ from a mathematically averaged nasal profile. Reduction rhinoplasty patients do not appear to have a different concept of the ideal nose than does the public at large. No statistically significant difference was found between the ideal nasal profiles selected by the rhinoplasty group and the public group. Differences between the rhinoplasty group and the public group were then compared, as was each group's deviation from the center of the scale.īoth groups preferred narrowly distributed differences from the "average" profile to a high degree of significance.

Center-scale images were created from mesh-warped ("morphed") computer averaging of 12 white women.

Twenty-seven patients seeking reduction rhinoplasty and 15 randomly selected members of the public evaluated a series of computer-manipulated photographic profiles using a pictorial visual analogue scale to rate their preferences for several variables. To evaluate whether patients seeking reduction rhinoplasty hold a different concept of the ideal nose than does the general public, and to determine what features characterize the ideal nasal profile.
